How long can cannabis seeds be storedUpdated 2 months ago

Cannabis seeds are living and their vigor slowly declines over time. With proper storage you can keep seeds viable for several years. Many growers see good results for 3–5 years and sometimes longer. At room temperature and in humid conditions, lifespan shortens quickly.

Best-practice storage
  • Cool, dark, dry: Avoid heat, light, and humidity swings.
  • Airtight container: Use a small glass jar or vacuum-seal bag with a fresh desiccant pack.
  • Refrigerator for long term: Store on a middle shelf away from the door to reduce temperature changes.
  • Warm up before opening: Let sealed containers reach room temperature to prevent condensation on seeds.
  • Avoid freezing unless expert-sealed: Improper freezing can damage cells. If you freeze, vacuum-seal with desiccant and thaw fully while sealed.
  • Label clearly: Strain name and date stored.

Tip: Expect some decline each year. When starting older seeds, be extra gentle and keep germination conditions steady at 70–90°F (21–32°C) with towels moist, not soaked.
